Four Tips For Buying an Ottoman

Ottomans are awesome! There are so many uses and configurations of ottomans that you should know about. They originally were designed as footstools, and that is their most common use, but the shapes and sizes make them a versatile piece to have in your home. An ottoman can be purchased as a set with an armchair or loveseat in the same fabric or leather, but also can be purchased at a later time to update the look in room. You can find them in leather, denim, chenille, wood and leather and metal and leather - great combinations to fit almost any room design.

Many ottomans are footed or have a solid base, but some are on wheels, making it easy to "pull up an ottoman" for a chat, roll across the room to use as a foot rest or push into a corner during a party or get together. Here are a few tips for use when buying an ottoman.

1. Use an ottoman for a dining room table seating. This idea works well to open a dining room so that the chair backs don't block a lovely table view or window view outside. Some lids are two pieces with a flat piece of wood set into a frame and a leather cushion on top, while other ottomans are wicker or vinyl with a hinged lid.

The Normandy Double Bowl Sink is a traditional French farmhouse ceramic sink and is the second most popular sink. The reason for its continued popularity is that is the largest double bowl sink available.

Unlike many other double bowl sinks on the market, its two equal-sized bowls can easily accommodate bulky oven trays, and specifically those found in Agas. In fact it is the site's only double bowl sink that allows an Aga tray to be fully immersed in water. There is nothing more annoying than having a beautiful farmhouse sink that won't take large pots, pans and trays comfortably. Having a sink large enough to take oversize items makes much lighter work of washing up. The proportions of the Normandy French farmhouse sink were designed with this in mind, and count as its most practical feature to Aga owners and anyone who uses large oven trays or extra large cooking pots.

The Normandy Double Bowl Sink is made from fireclay ceramic, as opposed to the standard ball clay, which ensures an incredibly durable product. Using fireclay ensures the sink will be incredibly hard wearing if it is looked after with a bit of care and attention

This style of traditional French farmhouse sink is very popular at the moment as it fits in with all kitchen schemes, looking great in both traditional natural wood kitchens and even in the most contemporary kitchens where the sleek ceramic lines of the sink complement the streamlined banks of kitchen units. The Normandy Double Bowl Sink not only suits all styles of kitchen, it is a very practical ceramic sink. It is perfectly suited to washing up all sizes of pots and pans, but is also ideal for washing vegetables and even defrosting large pieces of meat. Because of its generous proportions, it's easy to rest a large leg of lamb in it comfortably to defrost.

French farmhouse sinks came into being shortly after the first ceramic Belfast and Butler sinks were being manufactured at the end of the 19th century. Two French brothers, Emile and André Porcher, set up a factory in northern France, using the local clay to make their ceramic sinks. The clay used here was of a superior quality to the rough red Staffordshire clay that was commonly used at the Potteries, and allowed the French manufacturers to create a more refined product. Some of the designs first created at the end of the 19th century are still in production today, proving that good design never goes out of fashion. The Porcher name continues today at its factory in the Loire region, and enjoys a reputation as one of the oldest and most highly respected names in fireclay sink manufacture.

The Normandy Double Bowl Sink features the manufacturer's logo embossed on the side wall of the sink, giving it an authentic vintage look. The french farmhouse sink will accommodate 60mm basket strainer wastes in a non-tarnish brass or Satin chrome finish. Another option is to have a plug and chain, but in this situation the chainstay needs to be drilled into the work surface.

Although fireclay sinks are easy to maintain, it's important to follow a few simple guidelines to keep it looking its best.

Cleaning daily with a non-abrasive cleaner like washing up liquid will prevent stains like coffee and wine building up. For tougher stains, like those from aluminum saucepans, it's best to use a specialist cleaning product recommended by the manufacturers, like Astonish, which is especially formulated for fireclay ceramic sinks. Don't put a plastic washing up bowl in the sink as the dirt that collects on the base of the bowl will scratch ceramic.

Every kitchen needs one. There are different ways to approach the issue of how to provide this needed storage. Obviously, you have to work around the layout of the kitchen area.

In the case of having such a small kitchen that there is no room for a pantry cabinet, you will be restricted to using racks that hang over doors. These can be placed on closet doors, or doors leading to basements, in close proximity to your kitchen.

Another option to the door rack is a free-standing pantry cabinet which can be positioned near the kitchen. These can be found in any style and color you can think of. If you select this solution to your food storage problem, make it reflect your style and design preference.

Built-in Kitchen Pantry Cabinet

The most typical solution to finding a place for food storage is the built-in cabinet which matches the rest of your cabinetry. These cabinets are usually made either 12" or 24" deep, and the full height of the other cabinets (7 ft. or higher).

In the case of the 12" deep cabinet, the interior is very straight forward. You should have 5 adjustable shelves, positioned to accommodate the heights of the products you will keep there.

Each shelf should have a specific type of product (i.e. beverages on one shelf, paper products on one, canned goods on one, etc.) Common sense will dictate that you place the tall items behind the shorter ones. Labels should not be necessary.

When dealing with 24" deep cabinets, the problem of seeing and accessing what is at the back of the shelf needs to be addressed. In the event that your kitchen is existing and you are upgrading, there are several organizing accessories available. Rev-A-Shelf and K V are both good sources of quality products. These can get expensive (up to 00, plus installation). I do not recommend buying racks that are attached to the doors of the kitchen pantry cabinet. These racks will become heavy, and over time you will have problems with door alignment.

Hinges will often need adjusting, and screws will loosen. Furthermore, these doors are usually higher than other cabinet doors and they are only 3/4" thick. Seasonal changes in temperature and humidity will cause warping, which will be increased by the additional weight of the racks.

What I strongly recommend for both existing and new pantry cabinets, built-in or free-standing, is the pull-out tray. It is not only as useful as the other organizing systems, but it is also A LOT cheaper.

Trays are different from shelves in that they have lips all around the perimeter which keeps stuff from sliding off. The lip also provides a place where the drawer slide hardware can be attached.

The bottom tray should have HD (heavy duty) slides which can accommodate up to 150 lbs. This is where your large beverage bottles should be, so that you don't have to lift the weight very far.
Other trays can have 100 lb. slides, but ALL slides should be of the ball-bearing variety, and "full-extension" slides. The highest tray should be reserved for paper products and other light-weight items.

Butler's Pantry

If you're lucky enough to have a separate room for a pantry, you have 2 options. A Butler's pantry is typically a work area. Therefore, upper and lower cabinets usually are made for storage, with a counter top to work on. This area might have a sink as well.

The other option is strictly storage on shelves. The greatest capacity is achieved with a rolling shelving system like those made by Lundia (Google "rolling shelving" to get more info).

This would apply only if you have 10 kids, have many relatives living with you, own a soup kitchen, or feed the neighborhood regularly. Otherwise, this option might be overkill.

Most computer users depend on Microsoft Operating Systems in one way or the other. To keep Windows operating system up and running requires the necessary evil of optimizing the system as a part of their regular preventive maintenance program. Most users put this daunting task off as long as possible or at least until system performance becomes sluggish and user-unfriendly. To find a program that would allow the user to perform system optimization for a minimum cost and with maximum ease would be a welcome find. There is a program that is free of charge, contains a light footprint, does not use a heavy amount of system resources, can run in the background virtually out of sight of the end-user, does not conflict with other software and has a industry-wide top-rated reputation. This program is known as CCleaner.

This software is saved countless users huge amounts of time and money over the years. It is easily downloadable, installable, and configurable. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. To fully explore the features, you can begin in one of three ways, either (1) Double-clicking the desktop icon, or (2) Clicking on Start, Programs, CCleaner, or (3) Right-clicking on the Recycle Bin and selecting "Open CCleaner..." I choose Options, Advanced, Hide warning messages, then Options, Advanced, Close program after cleaning, and finally uncheck Options, Advanced, Show prompt to backup registry issues, and Options, Advanced, Minimize to System Tray. In addition to this I will schedule CCleaner to run daily using the Scheduled Tasks feature of Windows. This is a wonderful feature to setup for end-users as part of their preventive maintenance schedule.

Some people do not like toolbar additions to their internet browser, so CCleaner asks users during the installation if they would like to install "CCleaner Yahoo Toolbar" as part of the installation. For your information, CCleaner offers "alternate builds" of which one is a "slim" version of the full version of CCleaner. The entire installation process takes less than a minute to complete. Did I say "easy" or what?

In summary, I fully recommend CCleaner as a valuable addition to anyone running any Microsoft Windows operating system, including Windows 7 (32 bit and 64 bit). To not use CCleaner on a regular basis would be a costly mistake.
